Our Conservation Charity
“Conservation is at the heart of what we do and what we're about”
As well as being a luxury glamping site Medley Meadow is 11 acres of preserved organic wildflower meadows and wetland and hedgerows. We're very proud of our conservation area. The idea for this type of business - one which supports conservation - was born in Africa, many years before when we built a tented camp on the bank of the Zambezi River with the local community. We've now been involved in conservation through our businesses in Africa for many years.
Chris, Andy's brother, started and ran businesses in Zambia and Cape Town in South Africa with Andy & Mark and although we didn't start out as conservationists, conservation and the environment ended up being a huge part of what we are about.
Our businesses in Africa eventually employed around 70 people and most of the team have been with us from the very start. We believe that treating the people you work with fairly and properly is the right thing to do. Equality of opportunity, local involvement and empowerment, these are values from our business that we take to our charity.
A hard lesson for us to learn was understanding that to survive the environment has to benefit people financially. Not just the few who own businesses but everyone involved in them. In Africa we believe that the best way to conserve wildlife is for all people, not just wealthy safari lodge owning companies, to benefit from it. To do this people need an education and that is where our charity comes in. We raise money to fund scholarships in conservation for local people. They return home after qualifying to a career paying them a proper decent wage. A wage supporting their families earned by conserving animals creates a generation of conservationists.
You staying with us enables us to conserve the meadows and environment we are in and allows other people to enjoy the meadows, for dog walking, children playing in the stream or picnics.
